La Maggiolina – Milan’s architectural district

The Maggiolina neighbourhood is one of the most exclusive areas in the city of Milan. It takes its name from an ancient cascina farmhouse that stood in the current Via Maggiolina until 1920. This exclusively residential area is quiet and traffic free, developed with lovely single family homes built in a different architectural styles ranging from Gothic to Victorian. The area offers many public green spaces: about 20,000 m² split between the Aldo Perotti Park and the Gregor Mendel Park. The Maggiolina neighbourhood is linked to Milan’s internal ring road through Piazza Carbonari, and to Viale Zara through Piazzale Istria. It is near the Central Station, which allows easy access to any means of transport.

The neighbourhood maintains a strong connection with its history. It has so many interesting architectural styles that it is defined as “the neighbourhood of architecture”. Visitors can admire original houses like Villa Figini, called “la palafitta”, in Via Perrone, which was designed according to the constraints of rationalist architecture, or the Igloo houses, extravagant homes built in the 1940s next to the section known as the “Journalists Village”, il Villaggio dei Giornalisti in Via Lepanto, and a reference point for the entire district. Other important buildings are the historic Villa Mirabello and the 17th century Church of Saints Carlo and Vitale alle Abbadesse.
